100 “Zero-Carbon-Ready Building Certifications” reached in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Green Building Council has reached and achievement of certifying 100 zero-carbon-ready buildings, which the council celebrated during the Zero-Carbon-Ready Building Certificate Presentation Ceremony on 26 November, during which 35 certificates were issued, highlighting the growing industry commitment to carbon reduction.

The ‘HKGBC Climate Change Framework for Built Environment (3rd Edition) Launching cum Zero-Carbon-Ready Building Certificate Presentation Ceremony’ gathered around 200 industry leaders and experts to discuss future strategies for carbon reduction and sustainable development in the built environment.

TheZero-Carbon-Ready Building Certification Schemeis launched under the “HKGBC Climate Change Framework for Built Environment.” It aims to support the formulation of net-zero strategies and promote carbon reduction in the industry.

Third edition

The Framework has recorded over 45,000 downloads across more than 50 regions worldwide. The HKGBC, through the Editorial Panel and five Expert Groups comprising 46 industry experts, revised its third edition, which includes updates and guidance on embodied carbon, operational carbon, carbon offsetting, climate risk assessment and disclosure. It also showcases real-world examples of climate adaptation and resilience, along with an additional chapter on “Biodiversity & Nature-based Solutions”.

TSE Chin-wan, BBS, JP, secretary for Environment and Ecology, the Government of the HKSAR, said, “The new edition has incorporated the latest developments to address not only carbon emissions, but also carbon offsetting, biodiversity, and nature-based solutions. With local case studies compiled to illustrate effective applications, the updated Framework is a valuable reference for the building sector in achieving ‘net-zero’.”
