Gartner, Inc. unveils four emerging challenges that challenge CIOs to deliver value with AI: managing AI benefits, managing costs, AI and data risks, and its impact on employees' performance and well-being.
"Because of the relentless innovation happening in the tech vendor race, CIOs feel like they are alwaysliving the hype, while the reality of their AI outcomes race - how tough it is to get value - makes it feel like they are alsoin the trough," said Alicia Mullery, VP Research at Gartner during the "2024 IT Symposium/Xpo Keynote at a Glance.
Emerging challenges
Gartner analysts posit that people must consistently use GenAI tools in their workflow to generate business value with generative AI (GenAI).
"In these cases, CIOs should manage AI benefits like a portfolio. Determine the size of your bet in each benefit area and manage risks and rewards across this," Mullery said.
Moreover, Gartner finds that over 90% of CIOs said that managing costs limits their ability to get value from AI for their enterprise. Gartner estimates a 500%-1,000% error in their cost calculations if CIOs fail to understand how their GenAI costs scale.
Gartner also finds that only 35% of their AI capabilities will be built by their IT teams, challenging CIOs to devise new approaches to managing and protecting data access and governing AI inputs and outputs.
Lastly, Gartner reports only 13% of EMEA CIOs said they focus on mitigating potential negative impacts of GenAI on employee well-being, such as resentment and feeling threatened.
