New Relic has developed a new open-source feature called New Relic AI Coding Observability, an observability solution designed specifically for AI-assisted software development.
It targets to extend production-grade monitoring directly into the coding phase of the software lifecycle, to govern, optimise and audit otherwise fragmented, unmonitored AI usage.

“You can’t manage what you can’t see. AI coding assistants are having a measurable impact on businesses, but without real-time oversight into how they’re behaving, organisations are scaling risk as fast as they’re scaling output,” said Brian Emerson, chief product officer, New Relic. “New Relic AI Coding Observability will close this gap, removing barriers to quality innovation that succeeds in production.”

Key features and benefits of New Relic AI Coding Observability will include the following:
- Insights into how AI coding tools behave as applications and services are developed.
- Tracking AI spend, eliminating black-box invoices, forecasting spend against budgets, and alerting before thresholds are hit.
- Enhancing productivity metricsfrom coding assistant use with hard data and catching inefficiencies and hidden failure modes.
- Data sovereignty, privacy and regulatory compliance, with local-only / zero-outbound mode running queries entirely within the user’s private network
- Fully readable, open-source and source-available code
- Backed natively by the OpenTelemetry protocol and Model Context Protocol (MCP) to deliver vendor-neutrality
- Supports Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf and Amazon Q.
