OpenAI announced the release of GPT-5.5, claiming it is the company’s “smartest and most intuitive to use model yet”.
In a recent announcement by the foundation model developer, GPT‑5.5 is engineered to excel at writing and debugging code, researching online, analysing data, creating documents and spreadsheets, operating software, and seamlessly switching between tools to complete complex tasks. Highlighting its ability to handle multi-part tasks without step-by-step guidance makes it highly relevant for agentic coding, knowledge work, and scientific research.
“GPT‑5.5 delivers this step up in intelligence without compromising on speed: larger, more capable models are often slower to serve, but GPT‑5.5 matches GPT‑5.4 per-token latency in real-world serving, while performing at a much higher level of intelligence. It also uses significantly fewer tokens to complete the same Codex tasks, making it more efficient as well as more capable,” according to the announcement.
Safeguards
OpenAI claims it is releasing the latest model with its strongest set of safeguards to date.
It has evaluated GPT-5.5 against its comprehensive safety and preparedness frameworks, collaborating with internal and external red teamers. The team conducted targeted testing for cybersecurity and biology capabilities, incorporating real-world use-case feedback from nearly [200] early-access partners before release.
Roll outs
GPT‑5.5 has rolled out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT and Codex. Its Pro version has been released to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT.
Looking ahead, OpenAI will bring GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5 Pro to the API.
