Snowflake has recently announced the integration of ILMU, Malaysia’s homegrown sovereign large language model (LLM) developed by YTL Labs, into its AI Data Cloud platform to enable localised and governed enterprise AI.

Satchit Joglekar, regional vice president, Snowflake ASEAN, said: “With Snowflake now available in the AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) region and the integration of ILMU into our platform, we are giving Malaysian enterprises the confidence to adopt AI securely within their enterprise data environment, in the language their customers speak, without compromising on governance or compliance.”
Enabling localised and governed enterprise AI
Coinciding with Snowflake’s availability on AWS Malaysia Region in April, this integration aims to address gaps in highly regulated sectors in the country, such as financial services, telecommunications, and the public sector:
- Linguistic and Cultural Context: ILMU provides a specialised understanding of Bahasa Melayu, Manglish, and regional dialects, ensuring AI applications are locally relevant and accurate.
- Data Residency and Governance: By operating within Snowflake’s secure framework in the AWS Malaysia region, organisations can deploy generative AI confidently, knowing sensitive data stays on-shore and aligns with national governance standards.
- National Strategic Alignment: The initiative supports Malaysia’s RM2 billion Sovereign AI Cloud commitment, facilitating AI innovation while maintaining strict data sovereignty.

“The integration of ILMU Sovereign LLM with the Snowflake environment represents a significant milestone in localising high-performance AI,” said Foong Chee Mun, CEO, YTL AI Labs. “By enabling seamless access to Malaysia’s national language model on a secure, global platform like Snowflake, we are ensuring that Malaysian enterprises can deploy AI solutions that are culturally relevant, legally compliant, and hosted in Malaysia.”

Nic Ngoo, chief technology officer (CTO) at Ryt Bank, said: “YTL AI Lab’s ILMU and Snowflake in-country deployment, our customers can bank using natural, culturally nuanced language for everything from transferring money, seeking personalised financial advice to seamless customer support, all while ensuring the highest standards of data residency and governance.”
