PodChats for FutureCIO: Digitization vs Digital Transformation

When it comes to digitization and digital transformation (DX) everyone has his or her own vision of what digital is and what is means to undergo digital transformation. The differences in opinions and approaches are reflected in the diversity of successes. What is nearly universal is the 70%+ mortality rate of digital transformation projects.

During the early days of the DX euphoria we saw new C-suite titles mushrooming all over the place. From Chief Digital Officer, Chief Transformation Officer, Chief Customer Officer, etc. The new titles are a reflection of the lack of experience enterprises has on the topic of digital transformation.

In truth everyone can and should be part of the digital transformation journey. Who leads it and how it evolves is another story for another time.

What is clear is that there is no shortage in “digital transformation” war stories. But rather than sulking over memories of what could have been or what went wrong, FutureCIO spoke to two professionals talk about what they think are learnings from those who have gone before us when it comes to digital transformation.

Listen to Murphy Choy, executive director at Mc Edutech, and Fred Giron, vice president and research director for Forrester, share their views and experiences dispelling the misunderstandings around digitization and what it takes to succeed in your digital transformation journey.

In this PodChats for FutureCIO: Digitization vs Digital Transformation, we cover questions that should be discussed, debated and argued during the early days of any transformation theorizing.

  1. Why do businesses and executives seem to confuse digitization with digital transformation?
  2. Can you elaborate further on the confusion between digital transformation versus digitization?
  3. What makes for a successful digital transformation initiative?
  4. Is there anyway to guarantee a successful transformation effort?
  5. In a separate discussion you mentioned that a transformation initiative needs to have a vision that is unified, meaningful, and actionable. What do you mean by that?
  6. What kind of metrics do we need to have in place to ensure a successful digital transformation?
  7. I often get asked by C-suites – why do digital transformation efforts fail? IN your view, what is the number one reason for failed DX initiatives?
  8. Beyond culture, what else can stall a transformation initiative?

We invite you to submit your ideas on topics you’d like us to cover on the next episode of PodChats for FutureCIO. Please email us at [email protected].
