Over the next seven years, operators will generate an additional revenue of USD 17 billion from the growth of 5G satellite networks, Juniper Research finds.
Growth forecast
Researchers predict the first commercial launch of a Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)-compliant 5G satellite network in 2024 and it is forecasted to grow to over 110 5G satellite connections by 2030.
With the projected growth of 5G networks over the next few years, researchers urge operators to begin partnering with Satellite Network Operators (SNOs) that can launch next-generation satellite hardware into space. SNOs can launch Geostationary Orbit (GSO) satellites that follow the earth’s rotation. These satellites can provide consistent connectivity as they will always be located above a predefined country.
The research also urges operators to maximise their pre-existing relationship with mobile subscribers for the continuous growth of 5G satellite connectivity revenue in the years to come. Through the convergence of satellite services and existing networks, existing billing relationships will capacitate the adoption of satellite connectivity.
6G Network
Juniper research predicts that 6G development will also accelerate and there will be an increasing reliance on SNOs for service provision.
“Operators must not only think of 5G satellite services when choosing an SNO partner but also the forward plan for 6G networks, including coverage and throughput capabilities,” research author Sam Barker says.
