The technology sector remained the most impersonated industry in brand phishing due to its wide usage in corporate and remote work environments, according to the Brand Phishing Ranking for Q1 2024 by Check Point Research.
Top phishing brands
In the first quarter of 2024, Microsoft (38%), Google (11%), and LinkedIn (11%) were most frequently imitated by malicious players to steal personal information or payment credentials.
Airbnb (1%) made it to the top 10 for the first time, likely influenced by the Easter season when travel and holiday bookings are peaking, amplifying its exposure among travelers.
Other phishing brands included in the top 10 for the first quarter of 2024 are as follows: Apple (5%), DHL (5%), Amazon (3%), Facebook (2%), Roblox (2%), and Wells Fargo (2%).
Heightened vigilance
Omer Dembinsky, data group manager at Check Point Software, highlighted the importance of maintaining high vigilance amidst the surge in phishing attacks.
"In light of the persistent threat posed by brand impersonation, it is imperative for users to maintain a heightened level of vigilance and exercise caution when engaging with emails or messages purportedly from trusted brands. By remaining vigilant and adopting proactive cybersecurity practices, individuals can mitigate the risk of falling victim to cybercriminal tactics,” said Dembinsky.
