There has been a significant shift in workplace dynamics as the 2024 Work Trend Index, a joint report by Microsoft and LinkedIn, reveals that a staggering 88% of workers in Hong Kong are actively using generative AI (GenAI) in their daily work.
"AI is a business imperative. With generative AI being used by 88% of knowledge workers at work, it is impressive to see employees in Hong Kong are much more willing to empower themselves to adopt innovations than most other regions. However, AI transformation is not a one-time event – it's an ongoing journey that requires leaders' commitment, adaptability, and strategic leadership," said Cally Chan, general manager of Microsoft Hong Kong and Macau.

Moreover, the study uncovers a strategic approach by Hong Kong leaders in AI deployment. A significant 86% of AI users are bringing their own AI tools to work, indicating a high level of personal investment in the technology.
It is also noteworthy that 23% of AI power users likely heard about the importance of using generative AI at work from their CEO, showing a top-down approach to promoting AI adoption.
Additionally, 77% of leaders are more inclined to hire a less experienced candidate with AI skills than a more experienced candidate without them, highlighting the value they place on AI proficiency.
The study also revealed that only 14% of AI power users in Hong Kong are likely to receive tailored AI training for their specific role or function.
"Given how rapidly our ecosystem is evolving, leaders who prioritise agility and invest in skills development gain a competitive edge by fostering a workforce ready for AI," Mei Mei Ng, general manager and head of Talent Solutions at LinkedIn Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Harnessing full AI potential
To harness AI's full potential, the joint report suggests business leaders channel employees' enthusiasm from AI experimentation into AI transformation, initiate company-wide training to influence changes, and adopt enterprise-grade AI solutions for more secure AI deployment.
