In the pursuit of making sports and healthy lifestyles more accessible, Decathlon unveiled its data lab, recently in Singapore. What started out as an e-commerce sports retailer in Singapore. Decathlon has became one of the pioneers in the omni-channel approach with the establishment of their first experience store in 2016.Â
Since then, the company has developed and tested a number of retail innovations with the opening of its Singapore Lab in 2019, including the RFID inventory robot which has been deployed to more than 120 stores worldwide. RFID is a radio frequency identification method to track goods by means of tags which are transmitted through a radio signal.
The RFID inventory robot has been deployed to more than 120 stores worldwide to improve efficiency and track how a product is fairing on its shelves. This allows data analysts to study consumer behaviour, plan their marketing strategies, and enrich the user experience in more innovative ways.
All of its outlets are equipped with self-checkout kiosks for cashless payments. Its RFID-based conveyor system enables a 2-hour island-wide commitment delivery.

Lab test-beds retail innovations to enrich customer experience
Its 700-square metre innovation hub aims to develop new digital services as well as incubate data-based projects. In collaboration with partners such as government agencies like Sport Singapore, and various research agencies and schools, Decathlon is inspiring communities with its innovation and grow its business.
Located in Kallang, Singapore’s inclusive sports precinct, the new data lab provides a collaborative working environment for data experts, software developers and designers, network, security and innovation teams as well as industry partners and students.
The data lab is attracting talents in the technology sector, especially the youth to set up a collaborative community to enrich customer experience. This is to balance the needs of consumers, sports enthusiasts with their enterprise and commercial goals.
The company also recently launched a mobile app, to adapt to the major shifts in consumer needs and increase of on-line shopping during the pandemic.
Incubator area to spur more innovation
An incubator area welcomes technology partners to collaborate and run on-ground trials at its Singapore lab and presents the opportunity to team up with young technology students, during their industry attachments.
