Streamlining clinical workflows to enhance healthcare coordination

Altera Digital Health partners SingHealth to enhance healthcare delivery with EMR technology

A suite of healthcare IT solutions will provide SingHealth to support its electronic medical record (EMR) platform. SingHealth, supported by the national Integrated Health Information Systems (IHiS), has been using the SunriseTM clinical manager system since 1998.

The comprehensive EMR platform suite will elevate Singapore's integrated care approach for more than 20,000 healthcare professionals in its network of acute hospitals, national specialty centres, community hospitals and polyclinics, which serves more than half the nation's population.

Equipped with application programming interfaces (API) the configurable platform by IHiS, will adapt to relevant clinical workflows and integrate with its suite of systems seamlessly. With the platform they can build their own healthcare IT solutions. This enables greater expandability, flexibility and scalability of its clinical workflows for more seamless patient care across the healthcare supply chain.

The implementation of EMR has given clinicians live (and ever-growing) information about patients. With technological advancements in data analytics, healthcare professionals can now gain insights that were not easily or previously apparent.

While administrative data that capture details like a patient’s length of stay and identification details had long been digitised, it wasn’t the case for clinical data. Before EMR platforms existed, thick cases of clinical notes were handed to the medical records office and entered into the system by non-medically trained staff.

Over the years, comprehensive notes of hundreds of thousands of patients have accumulated – and so has the potential for mining new medical insights.

The new clinical manager system will "enable greater interoperability and lessen the information burden, so that more value can be given to clinicians to achieve better health outcomes," said Marcus Perez, president of Altera Digital Health.”

The solution suite is a comprehensive, open platform that connects all aspects of care across multiple healthcare disciplines.

Human-centred design creating enhanced interoperability for the healthcare sector

The platform will support strengthen patient care management and advance the quality of healthcare for Singapore. The system allows complex processes of clinical workflows to be digitised on the platform, enabling clinicians to better manage patients’ health records more effectively and focus on delivering more value-based care for their patients.

Acting as an information hub, clinicians can also holistically review patients’ health records and long-term care plans. The platform helps clinicians identify patterns of care and gain additional insights to optimise healthcare delivery.

Professor Ivy Ng, group chief executive officer, SingHealth, said, “As healthcare needs of Singaporeans continue to evolve, we need to leverage technology and digital solutions as key enablers to improve care delivery and clinical outcomes and optimise resources. We hope to galvanise technological advances and develop more innovative solutions to address healthcare challenges now and for the future.”
