Artificial Intelligence (AI) and tools using large language models (LLMs) will drive more than 30% of the increase in demand for application programming interfaces (APIs) by 2026, according to Gartner, Inc.
“With technology service providers (TSPs) leading the charge in GenAI adoption, the fallout will be widespread. This includes increased demand on APIs for LLM- and GenAI-enabled solutions due to TSPs helping enterprise customers further along in their journey. This means that TSPs will have to move quicker than ever before to meet the demand,” said Adrian Lee, VP analyst at Gartner.
Increased API demand
A Gartner survey revealed that 83% of TSPs have started deploying generative AI (GenAI) within their organisations. Gartner projects more than 80% of independent software vendors to embed GenAI capabilities in their enterprise applications by 2026.
“Enterprise customers are at different levels of readiness and maturity in their adoption of GenAI, and TSPs have a transformational opportunity to provide the software and infrastructure capabilities, as well as the talent and expertise, to accelerate the journey,” said Lee.
Embedding GenAI capabilities
Before embedding GenAI capabilities into products and services, Gartner suggests documenting the use case and defining the user value of GenAI in a product or service. It is crucial to optimise GenAI in offerings and consider how the costs may affect pricing.
Gartner also highlights the importance of addressing users’ experience to aid learning curves and securing case-specific risks such as result inaccuracy, data privacy, security, and IP infringement).
