Forrester describes the top 10 trends in infrastructure technologies for 2024.
“Technology infrastructure is no longer a generalised or limited set of homogeneous technologies. These technologies are evolving rapidly to best serve the business applications, scenarios, and use cases that enterprises need most. The recent focus on AI infrastructure has reinvigorated thinking around differentiation rather than just viewing it as a commodity stack,” the report noted.
Top trends
Top infrastructure technology trends for 2024 include the availability of sustainability measurement and management solutions to aid decarbonisation and the scarcity of AI infrastructure that limits generative AI adoption.
"Firms have sky-high expectations from AI, encouraging their investments to explore its potential in pilots and experimentation," wrote Michele Pelino, a principal analyst at Forrester. "We believe that 2025 is the year whe businesses start to demonstrate real return on investment and concrete value to justify the hype and expense of their AI initiatives."
Moreover,a Forrester survey revealsthat mass adoption of AI PCs will come in 2030 when all devices will have AI hardware. Forrester also predicts that AI PC adoption will coincide with the end of life for Windows 10 in 2025.
Forrester also finds that after 30 years, quantum computing has transitioned from theory to value, with current efforts toaddress error correction, connectivity, control, and scale concerns.
Forrester also finds that more than the traditional cloud is needed for the next generation of cloud-native distributed applications. Hyperscalers and specialised providers will cause the rise of the distributed cloud.
Looking ahead
In 2025, Forrester expects that changing business requirements for remote connectivity, AI to power insights, and Zero Trust protection will continue to significantly change the technology infrastructure.
