Jaime Capella, Gartner's Distinguished VP analyst, shares what should be on the CIO’s agenda for the coming months during his session at the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo.
“We found a cohort of CIOs and CXOs that work closely together and co-own digital delivery. We'll refer them as the Digital Vanguard,” Capella said.
Digital Vanguard

According to Capella, digital vanguards are “CIOs and CXOs who are jointly accountable for digital initiatives, co-own and co-lead digital delivery, and form multidisciplinary fusion teams of IT and business area staff who come together, work together, and share responsibility for delivering results.”
He said that they are key to breaking the “curse of random success”, with 71% of their digital initiatives hitting targets compared to the average 48%.
Action items
Capella proposed four action items to grow digital vanguards in 2025:
“The first one is to provide compelling digital platforms not just for IT staff but for technologists across the enterprise,” he said.
Additionally, he recommends instilling architectural awareness to ensure that technologists in the enterprise will work soundly and securely.
Third, Capella said enterprises must co-create business Innovation with business areas and, finally: “develop all technologists making sure that our workforce plans encompass technologists in it and technologists in business areas,” he said.
