OpenAI has introduced study mode in ChatGPT, a revolutionary learning experience that goes beyond providing answers. It's designed to guide users through problems step by step, making it an invaluable tool for homework assistance, test preparation, and learning new topics.
Study mode
Study mode has been meticulously crafted through a collaborative effort between OpenAI, teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts. This unique partnership has resulted in a set of custom system instructions that reflect a core set of behaviours, fostering deeper learning.
It aims to encourage active participation, manage cognitive load, develop metacognition and self-reflection, foster curiosity, and provide actionable and supportive feedback.

“Instead of doing the work for them, study mode encourages students to think critically about their learning. Features like these are a positive step toward effective AI use for learning. Even in the AI era, the best learning still happens when students are excited about and actively engaging with the lesson material, ” said Robbie Torney, senior director of AI Programs at Common Sense Media.
Key features
Study mode offers a range of features designed to empower users. These include interactive prompts, scaffolded responses, personalised support, knowledge checks, and the flexibility to toggle study mode on and off during a conversation with ease.
Study mode is available to logged-in users on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans, with availability in ChatGPT Edu coming in the next few weeks.
