As people feel more disconnected in the workplace, AI and technology are helping the workforce feel a greater sense of belonging. The EY Global Belonging Barometer 4.0 has revealed that 32% of respondents experience a stronger connection in the workplace through the increased use of technology and AI tools.
Moreover, 26% admitted consulting AI or a chatbot when feeling lonely or isolated.
“Many are regularly going a full workday without a real-time conversation, either in person or virtually, with some turning to AI or a chatbot to fill this relational void. AI is proving to be a double–edged sword for employees: some fear barriers, while others see it as a connector to augment inclusion,” the report explained.
Filling an emotional void with AI

The study of more than 5,000 adults from various industries and organisations globally, including Singapore and India, also revealed that workers are increasingly feeling excluded at work. This year, 85% of workers are feeling a growing sense of disconnection and loneliness at work, up from 75% in 2023.
With the growing void, 40% of Gen Zsa AI users have strengthened their workplace connections, compared to just 13% of Baby Boomers.
Despite workers across generations turning to AI for a sense of belonging, human connection remains essential. Almost half (48%) say that they feel genuinely connected through interactions with colleagues from different generations.
EY recommends that employers actively cultivate inclusive work cultures that foster belonging, engagement, well-being, and long-term retention. Creating such environments can make employees feel truly valued and supported, which benefits both individuals and the organisation.
