L'Oréal partners with IBM to pave the way for the development of a one-of-a-kind custom AI foundation model, a first in the cosmetics industry, to drive sustainable cosmetics creation forward.

Stéphane Ortiz, head of Innovation Métiers & Product Development at L'Oréal Research & Innovation, reassures us of their commitment to sustainability and inclusivity. He said, "As part of our Digital Transformation Program, this partnership will extend the speed and scale of our innovation and reformulation pipeline, with products always reaching higher standards of inclusivity, sustainability, and personalisation".
"This collaboration is a truly impactful application of generative AI, leveraging the power of technology and expertise for the good of the planet", said Alessandro Curioni, IBM fellow, vice president of Europe and Africa and Director of IBM Research Zurich.
AI model
The AI model, created using a vast array of formulations and component data points, is poised to significantly enhance L'Oréal's operations. It aims to streamline tasks such as product formulation, reformulation, and production optimisation.
IBM Consulting is committed to bolstering L'Oréal's innovation in the formulation discovery process. By helping L'Oréal understand the behaviours of renewable ingredients in cosmetic formulas, IBM is playing a crucial role in advancing the creation of sustainable cosmetics.

"At IBM, we believe in the power of purpose-built, customised AI to help transform businesses. Using IBM's latest AI technology, L'Oréal will be able to derive meaningful insights from their rich formula and product data to create a tailored AI model to help achieve their operational goals and continue creating high-quality and sustainable products," said Curioni.
