The Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, 2024, by Gartner, Inc., unveils a promising future with 25 disruptive technology trends that hold immense potential and fall into four key areas: autonomous AI, developer productivity, total experience, and human-centric security and privacy programmes.
“Generative AI (GenAI) is over the Peak of Inflated Expectations as the business focus continues to shift from excitement around foundation models to use cases that drive ROI,” said Arun Chandrasekaran, distinguished VP analyst at Gartner.
“This is accelerating autonomous AI. While the current generation of AI models lacks agency, AI research labs are rapidly releasing agents that can dynamically interact with their environment to achieve goals. However, this development will be a gradual process,” he adds.

Distilled from key insights from more than 2,000 technologies and applied frameworks, these technologies that have the potential to deliver transformational benefits over the next two to ten years fall under four key themes.
Autonomous AI, advanced AI systems that can perform human tasks, include multiagent systems, large action models, machine customers, humanoid working robots, autonomous agents, and reinforcement learning.
Developer Productivity, which includes effective communication and collaboration, is also about being in the “flow state,” a feeling of energised, focused, full involvement and enjoyment that inspires and motivates.
Total experience is a strategy that aims to create superior shared experiences for customers, employees, and users. It leverages technologies such as the digital twin of a customer, spatial computing, super apps, and 6G to address critical interactions and drive greater confidence, satisfaction, loyalty, and advocacy.
Human-centric security and privacy programs drive organisational resilience through security and privacy techniques that create a culture of mutual trust and awareness of shared risks between teams.
